Hello Owls and Owl Class parents!
This term seems to be going so quickly! I hope my email finds you all well. I must say how proud I am of all the Owls – they are working really hard in school and producing some lovely pieces of writing during Big Write and getting much quicker recalling maths facts such as number bonds to 10, odd and even numbers and doubles and halves! Mrs Bailey and Ms Tunstall are very impressed with Year one Owls who are also producing some amazing work! Well done everyone! It has been lovely to see pictures of the Owl children who are home learning and great to see you are working hard too!
Reception Owls in school will need to bring their trainers or daps tomorrow afternoon for PE with Mark Gunning. Year One Owls enjoy PE with Mark every Monday afternoon.
Just a few reminders if you are learning at home:
MATHS – White Rose https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/. This week, learning is on the story of ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’.
Keep counting in 2s, 5s and 10s (using previous links/ideas) https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares
Odd and Even numbers – Even numbers are the counting in 2s numbers. Use the link above to hi-light in different colours (up to 20) odd numbers (end in 1 3 5 7 9) and even numbers (end in 0 2 4 6 8)
Learn by heart doubles and halving https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jOzhiACB68 (check your child knows them by asking them doubles in a random order) We are now using this knowledge to learn halving e.g., if double 10 makes 20 half of 20 is 10…if double 7 is 14 half of 14 is 7, etc. Keep practising quick recall of facts!
Number bonds to 10 – focus on the trickier ones such as 8 +2, 7 + 3, 6 + 4 and reverse them! These seem to be harder to learn than 10 + 0, 9 + 1, 5 + 5
Number writing practise – practise writing single digits plus teen numbers e.g., 14 not 41, 18 not 81. Practise writing our ‘ty’ numbers e.g., 20 not 02, 40 not 04 etc
Doodlemaths – practise as much as you can!
For the remaining weekly phonics sessions, DFE Letters and Sounds daily sessions (live from 10am for YR and 10.30am for Y1) can be used by clicking on the link https://bit.ly/34KsiFS and then the relevant daily video.
Reception are now working comfortably in Phase 4 phonics and Year One working in Phase 5. Keep using https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources as an excellent learning resource.
READING – keep using Oxford Owls books on line. Those children attending school will have their reading books changed on their usual book change day.
RE – choose one learning activity from the learning grid each week (owl class page unless you are in Y1). This week in Owl Class we will be making a cut and stick ‘sedar plate’ as part of our work on Jewish festivals.
BIG WRITE – we will be planning our writing to write fun facts about Hammerhead sharks and watching short clips to see what we can learn!
TOPIC – choose two activities from the learning grid each week. This week we will be starting our own paper mache island and making a paperplate seagull (linked to our Lighthouse Keeper stories!)
Please feel free to also choose your own activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, gardening, singing and music, PE with Joe, yoga, walking, etc. Work hard, keep smiling and take care.
Have a lovely week and I’ll email you again next Monday.
Much love Mrs Payne
